Ivymount School’s reputation reaches as far as Malaysia. In mid-April, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, the First Lady of Malaysia, toured Ivymount as part of an official visit to the United States. Special Education is central concern to First Lady Rosmah, who toured Ivymount to learn more about education for students with developmental disabilities.

Because she is particularly interested in arts education for students with special needs, the First Lady and her party – which included the wives of Malaysian cabinet ministers, embassy officials, and representatives of Malaysian non-governmental educational organizations – enjoyed a performance by Ivymount Middle and High School students. The group also toured the music and art facilities, participated in a demonstration of Assistive Technologies, and met some Ivymount students. Students presented Rosmah with flowers and a piece of student art to take home with her.

Rosmah told journalists that she was particularly impressed by the way the school inculcated independence and social responsibility in the students and hopes to start a school for students with special needs in Malaysia.
